Neurofunctional Acupuncture

At South Jersey Sports Acupuncture, we use Neurofunctional Acupuncture so you can feel better and heal faster. Neurofunctional acupuncture therapy uses detailed assessment, acupuncture, and myofascial techniques to help the body adapt to its environment and the stresses put upon it. When the body adapts properly, pain diminishes and performance is optimized.

What does neurofunctional acupuncture do?

  • Neurofunctional Acupuncture re-stimulates the nervous system which reduces muscle motor inhibition caused by inflammation, stress, or injuries.
  • It also calms the stress response in the body, which allows improved blood flow to the injured tissues.
  • Neurofunctional acupuncture therapy also works by modulating the intensity of the nervous system response to injuries and stress.
  • Neurofunctional acupuncture calms the brain.

On another level, neurofunctional acupuncture decreases the non-pleasant signals caused by an injury. It decreases them on three levels:

  • At the sight of the injury,
  • Where they’re processed at the spinal cord, and
  • In the brain.

When all of these areas are covered in a treatment, it changes our perception of pain in the brain and it speeds the process of healing.

These goals are accomplished by accurately assessing the patient, selecting neuro-reactive acupuncture points, and introducing a pleasant electrical stimulation into the appropriate areas.

Why does the body stop adapting?

Injuries and stress cause the body to go into “fight or flight” mode. “Fight or flight” is also known as a sympathetic response. Sympathetic activity is controlled by the nervous system. Sympathetic activity can happen as follows:

  • Either centrally, in the brain and spinal cord, or
  • Locally, in the skin, blood vessels, nerves and muscles, or
  • Both centrally and locally.

The fight or flight response keeps us alive by allowing us to react quickly to dangerous situations. It is a primitive response that shuts down non-essential systems (reproductive and digestive) and redirects resources to the systems (heart, eyes, muscles, adrenaline) that will get us out of danger. On a local level, it shuts down capillaries around the injured areas to prevent loss of blood. We are much safer in modern times, yet this system still may function at the same intensity with injuries and stress.
